Now entering its 11th generation in 2022, Honda has done a great job of keeping the Civic a fresh and exciting option for buyers. Little has changed with the 2023 Honda Civic as it just underwent a redesign for the 2022 model year. The biggest news being the change in trims, as the LX trim has been dropped with the Sport trim replacing it as the new entry-level model, followed by the EX, Touring, and the highly anticipated return of the Type R. Buyers will still have their choice of body styles with the sedan and hatchbacks both being available for the upcoming model year.
It remains the go-to compact for drivers looking for Honda’s legendary reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall usability. Honda has done a great job of giving buyers an attractive list of standard options across the model lineup in an effort to remain competitive in the class.

2023 Honda Civic Performance and Capability
The 2023 Honda Civic is available in five trims across both sedan and hatchback body styles.
- Sport
- EX
- Touring
- Si
- Type R
Engine choices remain unchanged for 2023 and the 158 horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder comes standard while those looking for a little more performance can opt for the smaller 1.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 180 horsepower thanks to a turbo. Sedan lover lovers who like to row through their own gears are out of luck as the six-speed manual has been cut from this body style, leaving the CVT as the only option. The manual transmission is still available in the hatchback models. 0-60 times remain unchanged with drivers reaching 60mph in 7.3 seconds. Fuel economy continues to be stellar with drivers of the EX with the CVT seeing 33mpg city, 42mpg highway, and 36mpg combined.
Handling remains above average thanks to the current generation's improved chassis. Honda says it's more than 10 percent stiffer than the last generation. This allowed engineers to tune the suspension to take full advantage of the newfound rigidity allowing for better handling, improved ride quality, and less road noise and overall harshness. If you're looking for more handling and performance, Honda will continue to offer the Civic Si and Type R models respectively.

Exterior Design
The current look should still feel fresh as it was just unveiled for the 2022 model year. At first glance, car shoppers will think they’re looking at the Civic’s larger sibling, the Accord. Honda moved the A-pillars back while making the hood longer allowing for a larger windshield and improved visibility. Other design cues brought over from Accord are the upright front grille along with front and rear LED lighting.
Buyers won't have to spring for a higher trim to get an attractive look. Aggressive styling comes standard as the popular compact features beefy muscular lines once reserved for its corporate cousin over at Acura. What was once considered an entry-level vehicle all grown up?

Interior Quality and Technology
The Civic’s interior can best be described as inviting. In a world where automakers are seemingly trying to overwhelm drivers with buttons and switches, the interior is welcoming keeping distractions to a minimum, while highlighting functionality with the well-thought-out placement of things drivers will use the most. At the heart of the interior is an infotainment display sitting atop the dash, putting things within comfortable reach of the driver and keeping them pointed toward the road.
A long mesh strip extending the length of the dash feels like a homage to vehicles of old while tastefully integrating A/C vents and adjustments. A wide center console offers plenty of storage along with a deep bin just below the USB and 12-volt outlets.
Seating remains adequate for up to four adults, but things may get tight if you decide to take a long road trip. As usual, Honda doesn’t provide very many options for interior colors or seating surfaces with black being the only color option and leather only being offered in the Touring model.
There’s no shortage of technology inside. As standard, you get a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display with an optional 9.0-inch unit available along with a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto are both standard with wireless pairing available for buyers who opt for the larger screens. Other options available are in-dash navigation, premium Bose audio, and the increasingly convenient wireless smartphone charging pad.

Main Competition
The Civic has managed to remain at the top of the increasingly competitive compact car segment. Familiar models such as the Toyota Corolla, the Mazda 3, and Nissan Sentra continue to put out impressive offerings year after year. Models like the Volkswagen Jetta and Hyundai Elantra are offering even more options for buyers in the class. And with the rise in popularity among EVs, the face of this segment is rapidly changing, and expect it to become increasingly crowded in the coming years.
